Next week is NIME week! This year I am not going – Canberra is way too far from Berlin – but I finally got around uploading my presentation from last year’s conference though, which took place in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Features the Sophtar and a somewhat pretentious digression about magic, ergodynamics, and a quote from a book by Benjamin Labatut I was reading on my way there. Here is the paper!

The event took place in July 2024 at Universität der Künste Berlin, we brought together a community of artists, researchers, and practitioners and had a great time discussing the practice of embedding algorithms in the arts with presentations, exhibitions, and performances. Enjoy!

Workshop and Performance at Harvestworks, New York City

I recently ran a workshop and performed at Harvestworks in New York City. The workshop was done in collaboration with Andrew Telichan Phillips form the Music and Audio Research Laboratory at NYU Steinhardt. The amazing Ana García Caraballos performed with me my piece 11 Degrees of Dependence on alto sax, myo armbands, and live electronics. Here’s a video:

At New York University to work on sensors for music performance – pt. 5: tests with musicians

Some experiments I did together with Andrew Telichan Phillips and some very nice and talented musicians at NYU Steinhardt and at The Sweatshop.
We used Myo sensor armbands and Machine Learning to adapt control parameters to the movements of musicians playing different musical instruments.

While I’m in New York working on motion sensors for music performance, here is a video of my piece Kineslimina performed last June at 11th International Symposium on Computer Music Multidisciplinary Research (CMMR) in Plymouth, UK. I’m not 100% happy with the sound quality and I couldn’t access the raw footage to edit it myself but the guys filming the CMMR performances did a great job nevertheless.

The piece was performed by Esther Coorevits and me and I can’t stress enough how important Esther’s contribution to this piece was. Her feedback during rehearsals was vital for the development of the piece and her performance superlative. The piece will be performed again at the 2016 Peninsula Arts Contemporary Music Festival in February next year.

Kineslimina performed at CMMR and MuSA

Kineslimina was performed at the 11th International Symposium on Computer Music Multidisciplinary Research (CMMR) in Plymouth (UK) and at Sixth International Symposium on Music/Sonic Art in Karlsruhe (Germany).

The performers are Esther Coorevits on viola and motion sensors and yours truly on electric guitar and motion sensors.

Some of the pictures I took in the warehouse in Ravenna near the “darsena”, where I recorded some material for my solo electroacoustic project.

All the pictures were shoot by me using a tripod and long multi-exposures, only few minor adjustments were made after.

Leaving Beirut

I’m back home after some wonderful days in Beirut.

I completely forgot to ask some friend to take pictures during my concert at Yukunkun, luckily Maria Kassab snapped a couple of pictures with her mobile phone, I have also taken a picture of the set during the soundcheck. Thanks to Sharif Sehnaoui for inviting me and to all the people that came to the concert, the feedback I received was really lovely.
